A decarbonisation roadmap with owners and dates.

A decarbonisation roadmap turns a carbon footprint into a plan: which emissions to cut first, with which measures, by when and at what effort. Habitat builds it from your measured baseline, not from sector averages, so every target can be traced back to a source and every measure has someone responsible for it.

Who asks for one

Where the roadmap gets read.

Reporting

Companies in the post-Omnibus CSRD scope disclose a climate transition plan under ESRS E1. Under the voluntary VSME, the Comprehensive Module's C3 covers reduction targets and climate transition.

Buyers

Large customers set targets for their value chain and ask suppliers for their own targets and progress. A roadmap is the credible answer to 'what are you doing about it?'.

Banks and funders

Lenders and development programmes ask how a borrower will reduce emissions, and fund the measures when the plan shows the effect.

The levers

What actually moves the number.

Electricity. On coal-heavy grids such as Kosovo's, purchased electricity is often the largest controllable source. On-site solar, renewable supply contracts and guarantees of origin change the market-based Scope 2 figure; efficiency changes both the location-based and the market-based figure. We report both, as the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance requires.

Fuel and heat. Boilers, furnaces and vehicle fleets sit in Scope 1. Heat pumps, electrified processes and fleet changes cut them, and the ETS2 fuel price from 2028 improves the business case inside the EU.

Materials and suppliers. For manufacturers the largest share is usually Scope 3 category 1, purchased goods. Lower-carbon materials, recycled input and supplier-specific footprints are the levers, and the hardest to move without data from the suppliers themselves.

Design and logistics. Lighter products, less packaging, consolidated freight and modal shift, each measured against the baseline rather than assumed.

Deliverables

What you walk away with.

  • Baseline inventory: GHG Protocol, by scope, site and source, with factors and exclusions documented.
  • Marginal-abatement view: every lever with estimated reduction and effort class, so the cheap cuts come first.
  • Targets and pathway: base year, target years and the yearly path in between.
  • Action plan: measures with owners, timing and the indicator that shows progress.
  • Disclosure-ready text: wording for ESRS E1, VSME C3, CDP or a buyer questionnaire.
  • Tracking set-up: data flows in Karbon360° so next year's progress is a refresh, not a new project.

A target without a baseline is a guess. A baseline without owners is a report.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

What is a decarbonisation roadmap?
A plan that sets out how a company will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions over time: the measured baseline, the main sources, the reduction measures with their expected effect, the targets and the people responsible.
What is the difference between a decarbonisation roadmap and a transition plan?
They overlap. A transition plan is the disclosure term used in reporting standards such as ESRS E1; a decarbonisation roadmap is the working plan behind it. Habitat builds the roadmap and drafts the disclosure from it.
Do we need a carbon footprint first?
Yes. Every target and measure is expressed against a base year. If you do not have a GHG Protocol inventory yet, the roadmap starts by building one.
Can the targets be science-based?
Yes. The pathway can be built to align with science-based target-setting methods if you plan to submit targets for validation; we tell you upfront what that requires for your company.
How long does it take?
With an existing inventory, typically several weeks; with a new baseline, longer. You get the timeline with the fixed-fee quote.
